The Cost of Getting lost!
Search-and Rescue can get bloody expensive, especially if a helicoper (the cost of which can be in the hundreds of dollars an hour)is called in. "In California, the counties pay the cost of rescue," says Gary Steffens,a Reserve Deputy for California's San Bernadino County Sherrif's Department. "The sherrif's department bills the county in which you reside. It's their option to pass that bill on to you."Here's a rundown of some of the costs if you get lost in California:
Deputies..............$28 per person per hour
Volunteers...........$23 per hour per person
Horse & Rider.....$45 per hour
Dog & Handler....$40 per hour
4WD Vehicle........$.34 per mile
Helicopter............$500 per hour
