12/28/01 WINNIE IS MAKING ICE. We now have 8" of ice on Snag Hole Bar > and we are putting some of our liter house out with the Argo. Will be > checking out Moses Bar by the weekend. Northern are still running good > off the West Winnie Campgrounds and east of the Mississippi river in > 7' to 8' of water. 1' to 10" of ice in that area. Perch action is > still going great in the same areas. Use a fire tiger or a glow > fire-eye minnow tipped with a fathead. The buck Shot-rattling spoon > has brought in some dandy Northern, 33" the biggest so far. > Yesterday was the first day fishing on Sang Hole bar and got mixed > reports. The best reports came from the 18' to 23' depths. I did see a > 20" and a 24" Walleye caught in 20 min. Got busy setting houses so not > sure what else went on. Another group had a lot of Perch in the > buckets fishing at the same depths. Use the larger jigging spoons in > the deeper water. If the weather stays cold like it is now we should > be driving out some time next week. > Stay away from the mouths of all inlets or outlets, as the ice WILL be > thin. Ask any resort where the ice is the best. Remember NO ice is > totally safe.

12/16/01

Our ice is starting to look good. If you go out by the Mississippi mouth go south first then NE, just follow the tracks. 3" by the river and 7" to 8" in front of the west Winnie campgrounds. This should put you about the 7' depth range. Bowens flats has 6" to 8" (I was told this). Here on the west side it will take more cold days. We have 8" to 9" out about 1/8 mile then new ice (never went out to check how thick). Give us some cold windless days and we should be getting out on the west side. Had 39 degrees Sunday So this will not help much. A cold front moving in this week so this should help. We will be putting our dark houses out Monday morning.

11-11-01

Looks like winter finally getting here. The weatherman said we are to get 6 to 10" of snow and some cold temps coming with it. No ice yet just a lot of waves blowing in from the north. When ice does get going we will post updates so watch for them.

We will be at the St. Paul ice fishing show this coming weekend 11/30 to 12/2. Stop by and say hi.

10-22-01

Another year of great fishing & catching on open water, now it's time to think of ice fishing. For the hardy fishermen Walleye and Perch are going on Stony Point on the west side in the rocks. Use a 1/8 oz fire tiger fireball jig tipped with a fathead minnow. Doug outs on the rocks next to shore and fish the edge of the rocks in 7' of water. Use the same set up here. Cut Foot just east of Bowen's landing next to the bull rushes in 7' to 12'. The bull rushes on either side of the gap. The best bait is a crawler on a short Roach rig 24" long or a 1/8oz fireball jig chart/lime tipped with a fat head minnow. Perch are going great in all the same spots. This will be my last report tell the last part of Nov. I will be giving out ice conditions at this time. Thank you all for following our reports and will be seeing you on Big Winnie.

Capt. Ron

10/5/01

The great fall bite should be starting any day with the colder weather coming in. The humps and Eelpout Bar are still giving you some nice Walleye. Fish from 17' to 19' with a Roach rig 40" long and try a crawler or a leech. Sugar point and Mallard point in 7' to 8'. Mallard is doing the best south of the point in the weeds. Bowens bay along the weeds try at 7' and keep moving out to 12' or tell you get on the Walleye. Roach rig with a crawler doing the best. 1/8oz chart/lime fireball jig tipped with a fathead minnow is doing great.

Perch action is on most all points in the lake with Mallard point the best area. Fish in 7' to 8' with a Northland 1/8oz fire tiger fireball tipped with a fathead. Nice 10" to 12" Perch with great numbers being caught. Northern are still hot, fish just about any weed line in the 8' range will give you a lot of action. West Winnie summer homes and Ravens point areas doing the best.

Capt Ron

9/10/01

we started the week great then on Thursday the weather turned on us. Friday, sat & Sun was slow for the Walleye. Most went after Northern and Perch. What Walleyes came in was off Sugar bar, the humps and Ravens point. Use a Roach rig in 18'-19' tipped with a leech and use a 1/8oz firetiger fireball tipped with a fathead in 8'-9' of water off the points. Perch are going crazy off most all the points in 7' to 8' of water. I'm looking for the fall bite to get going this week in the shallows. Will post an update when this happens. captron

9/3/01 our week started with a lot of Walleye being caught. Friday & Sat was slow and we had to move a lot to stay on the Walleye. Sunday & Monday was SUPER great. A lot of slot fish put back and some limits coming in. Sugar bar, Moses bar, back side of Long bar, little Muskie & big Muskie bars being the best. Start by staying on the brake at 18'-19' then move up on top the bar to the 17' depth. Use a Roach rig with a green hook tipped with a leech or a crawler out to 60" long. Starting to get some report of Walleye in the shallows on Sugar Point and Ravens point in 7' of water. They were using 1/8-oz chat/lime fireball jigs and tipped with a fathead minnow. Perch is going wild on Ravens Point, Mallard Point and Stony Point in 6' - 7' of water. This is a good indication that our Walleye will be shallows in a few days.

8/20/01

What a great week for the Walleye and Northern catching. We hosted the Team Walleye championship and all the teams had a great time. Congratulations to Rick Gruebele & Kevin Woitas team winners. Sugar Bar, Moses Bar and the humps in the middle of the lake are the hot spots. A roach Rig 42" to 60" long with a red bead and tipped with a leech or a crawler. Put some PRO-CURE leech bait sauce on the bait then hang on to the rod. Fish 17' to 20' and when the other boats show up move to the top of the bar in 16' of water. Northern action is still going off Ravens point, west Winnie summer homes and 3rd river by Stony point. Perch action is heating up on Stony point and Ravens point in 7' to 8' with a 1/8oz chart fire-ball jig tipped with a fathead minnow.

captron

8/13/01

Walleye action been up and down this past week but even with the down days some nice Walleyes been coming in. Northern fishing is HOT. Most all the main big bars are giving up Walleye in 17' to 20' of water. Sugar & Moses bars are the hottest. The small humps are still giving up some great Walleye action. Fish the same water 17' to 20' with a Roach rig out to 60" to 80" depending on the wind. Tip your rig with a red bead and a leech.

Great Walleye, Perch action off Sugar Point in 8' to 9' of water. Been using a rig with a leech or a 1/8oz chart/lime fire-ball jig tipped with a fathead minnow. Northern is off Ravens point, Sugar point on the 3rd river side and Sugar Island. The Northern is in 8' to 10' weed lines and hitting Northlands Bionic Bucktail, Spinner baits and just a sucker minnow with bobbers. With stable weather this week I'm looking for the Walleye to just get better and the northern action to stay hot.

7-30-01 Been slow some mornings and then another day will be slow in the afternoon. Still seeing some limits of Walleye and a lot of Perch coming in. Shallows on the lower end of the High Banks by the rock and in Duck Pass. Fish at 6' then move out to 8" Ravens point in 8',Sugar Island 8' to 9'. Use a Roach rig at 40" and tipped with a leech. Most all the big bars in the south end of the lake are going. The hot ones are Snag Hole,Little Muski and the north end of Long Bar. Fish at 19' to 20' with a Roach rig out to 60" and tip with a leech. Slow is the way to go. Let the tail of the leech swim up off the bottom. Perch is on just about any point or weed line. 1/8oz chart fire-ball and tip with a fathead minnow. Getting a lot of nice perch in the 10" to 11" range off the humps in 19' of water. Northern action is heating up. The west Winnie summer homes, Mallard Point,3rd river on the Stony Point side. Blue & white or gold colors are working the best.

7/17/01

The week started great and the weekend was super. Hopefully the mayflies are over and Winnie will get back to norm. The humps are still giving up some nice eater Walleye and a lot of slot fish. Fish in 22' to 23' early day then move out to the 24' - 25'. The Roach rig out to 60" and tipped with a leech or crawler is the best bet. > Shallows are hot the last 3 days. Ravens rock ridge, Sugar Point on the grass hump & big Stony. Fish the tops of the humps and in the weeds. A rig 50" long with a green bead and tipped with a leech is the best. A lot of limits and very few slot fish in those spots. Been running about 50% slot for the other 50% eaters. This is making for a lot of fun releasing and still having Walleye to eat. Northern action is still in front of the west Winnie summer homes and Sugar Island. Just about any colored spoon is doing the trick.

7/9/01

We put in a tough week for catching with the big yellow mayfly hatch in full force. They should be done now and looking for our lake to get back to normal. Still having some limits and nice size fish coming in 27" to 30" long. The trick now is to go from hump to hump and find a good drop with no flies showing on the depth finder. Fish on the drop 19' to 20' early day then move out to the 22'-25' in the afternoon. Been using a Roach rig with a red bead out to 70" long. Tip the rig with a leech or a crawler and move real slow. Perch action started this week on the humps with Perch in the 9" to 12" range.

Northern action is still doing good in front of the bird houses and up 3rd river from Stony Point. Northlands rainbow color spoon and a black & white colors the best.

7/2/01

Another super week of fishing, catching & releasing. Some limits & a lot of slot fish put back & a LOT of nice fish coming in. Been seeing some 26" + Walleyes coming in and some put back. All of the humps are producing good numbers of 14" to 16" walleye Fish in the 21'-23' range. Also if the Walleye move off the drop because of boat traffic check out the edge at 17' to 18'.Long bar, third river bar, east west section of center bar, big and little muskie both on the north, south side and Moses Bar is giving up some nice eaters.Still the best to use is the Roach rig with a red bead stretched out to 60" with a green or red hook, tipped with a leech or crawler. The mayflies are still around so keep moving tell you find the hungry ones

Northern action been good south of Mallard point and up 3rd river from Stony Point side. Ravens Point in 6' to 7' with a fire-tiger 1/8oz fireball tipped with a fathead minnow is producing a lot of numbers of Walleye. A lot of little guys but great action is better then none. Captron.

6/26/01

Another super week of fishing, catching & releasing. A lot of limits & a lot of slot fish put back & a LOT of nice fish coming in. Been seeing some 26" + Walleye brought in and some released, the biggest was a 32" to mount. All of the humps are producing walleye in the 21-23' range. Also if the Walleye move off the drop check out the edge at 17' to 18'.Long bar, third river bar, east west section of center bar, big and little muskie both on the north, south side.Still the best to use is the Roach rig with a red bead stretched out to 60" green or red hook, tipped with a leech or crawler. The mayflies are starting to come out, but just keep moving from bar to bar tell you find the hungry ones. Northern action been good south of Mallard point and up 3rd river from Stony point side.

Captron.

6/18/01

Another super week of fishing & catching. A lot of limits & a lot of slot fish put back. Been seeing some 26" + Walleye brought in and some released. All of the humps are producing walleye in the 21-23' range. Eelpout bar, long bar, third river bar, east west section of center bar, big and little muskie both. Roach rig with a red bead stretched out to 60", tipped with a leech or crawler. The shallows have slowed this past week and the mayflies are starting to come out. The Walleyes you almost have to stop on top of them and then move real slow.

6/11/01

Another super week of fishing & catching. A lot of limits & a lot of slot fish put back. Been seeing some 26" + Walleye brought in and some released. All of the humps are producing walleye in the 21-23' range. Eelpout bar, long bar, third river bar, east west section of center bar, big and little muskie both. Roach rig with a red bead stretched out to 60", tipped with a leech or crawler. Little stony at 7-8', bird houses 8-9', west side of ravens point 7-8', 1/8oz. Firetiger fire ball jig, tipped with a fathead. With the walleyes going deep or shallow you can take your pick on where you want to fish.

6-3-01

What a great week we had for catching the Walleyes. Sugar Point,Sugar Island, in front of Sugar Lake opening,Little Stony, lower end of High Banks & the west Winnie summer homes. Fished in 7' to 9' with 1/8oz Fire-Tiger Fire-Balls tipped with a shiner or a fathead minnow. A lot of limits and a lot more slot fish put back from the shallows. Eelpout bar, north end of Long bar, south end of Moses and a few of the humps are giving up some nice keepers in the 15" to 16" range. Most of the fish coming off the bars are in the slot range of the 17" to 26" range, with some in the 26"+ kept for mounting. Use a Roach Rig with a red or chart bead out to 50" and tipped with a leech producing the best.

5-27-01

What a week rain, snow, cold and a lot of wind. This had a big inpact on our bite most of the week. Thursday tell today the bite is on again. Sugar point on the grass hump in 7' of water, Sugar Island 11'-12', Little Stony the 7' weed line and out on the 8' fingers. Lower Highbanks in the reclame area and the Rock. 1/8oz fire-tiger tipped with a fathead or Shiner minnow is the choice of bait. South end of Moses Bar is starting to go in the afternoons in 19' to 21' with a Roach rig with a glow bead or a red bead out to 60" long and tipped with a leech. We have seen a lot of limits the last 2 days and a lot of slot fish put back.

5-21-01

The bite is still on! Alot of limits of Walleye and a lot of slot fish released. Ravens Point 8-9 ft. late day 71/2 ft. 1/8oz fireball jigs, parrott or firetiger tipped with a fathead or shiner. Sugar Point 8-9 ft. use the same fireballs. West Winnie Summer Homes 9-10ft. same fireballs. Little Stony 7-8 ft. use the same thing. The bars are just starting to go late afternoon and evening, 17-18 ft. Use a Roach Rig out to 40" and a leech. Reports to me, the dishes and the gap are going strong. If your not catching Walleye you don't have any meat on your hook!

5-14-01

WOW what a great opener, great weather and the bite was on.A lot of limits and a LOT of slot fish put back. A lot of scattered Walleye from just west of Farley Creek to the Dugouts in 7' of water. Hot is the word for Mallard Point in > 7', mid day move out to 9'. Ravens Point in 8' and Sugar Point in 8' to 9'.Number 1 bait was the 1/8oz Parrot Fire-ball tipped with a Shiner or Fathead minnow was the answer, with the chart/lime fire-ball doing a good number on the Walleyes too. Afternoon a Roach rig with a red bead set at 30" with a leech or a shiner was producing good numbers. The water warmed up to 59 degrees on Sunday afternoon so watch for the bite to get hotter.

5-10-01

With the ice going out April 30th and the great weather we are having plus the water temp at 52 degrees we should have a super good opener. Look for the points or any weed line > from 3' out to 10'. The chart lipstick jig and a chart tail tipped with a shiner or a fathead will do the trick. 1/8 oz chart/lime or the parriot fire-ball will be deadly mid day. Good luck and will see ya on the lake Sat.

captron

3/9/01

This will be my last report till May. We still have good ice and looks like it will be good till the last of March or first part of April. Snag Hole is hot today and Center Bar is doing great. Fish the bars in 35' to 40' with the rattlin fire-eye or the stright Fire-eye minnow tipped with a fathead minnow or half a minnow. Chart or bronze is the best colors even for the shallows. Ravins point is starting to give up nice Perch so Sugar Island should be starting any time. Fish in 8' to 10' and keep moving till you get on them. Hope you liked the reports & good luck, see you in the spring. captron@judds-resort.com

3-2-01

The DNR is giving us a runaround on what they want the limits for Perch to be for next year. The DNR is leaning towards the 20 a day and 30 in possession. Rep Larry Howe and Senator Tony Kinkle introduced bill house file #1161 to keep it at 20 a day and 50 in possession for 5 more years and the DNR to do more studying for a change in limits. We need all people to contact, phone, e-mail,
write your reps and senators for your district and give Howe and Kinkle support for this bill.Click on this link to find the info for your districk http://www.house.leg.state.mn.us/ Our Perch are in NO danger that we can see. Thank you for your support.

2-26-01

Been a slow bite the last few days with all the wind and snow. The south end of Moses and the south end of Snag hole is still giving up some nice Perch. The Walleye and Northern season is closed for now, will open in May again. Will give a later update on the bite (if the wind ever lays down).

2/19/01

The Perch bite has slowed again with the cold front and all the wind we are having. The best spot was on Moses bar in 28' of water. The fisherman doing a lot of moving on the bars & in the shallows are having the best bite. The gold angeleye, rattlin spoons, fire-eye minnows tipped with a half a fathead minnow is the best bet. A lite ice rod with 2 to 4 lb test is working becaause of the lite bite.Jeff Beckwith located suspended Walleye yesterday in 27' of water suspended up to 10' off the bottom. These eyes are chasing the tulibees and we found them to be aggressive. Be aware of the slot size.
One last thing.. Stay on the roads or use ATVs or snowmobiles out there. Off roading far is NOT recommended unless you have a big shovel and a strong back!(quote by Jeff sore back and all). Snowmobile trails are groomed and in excellent shape.

2/11/01

The Perch bite was slow the last 3 days. The fisherman that did the best moved a lot to get on the school of fish. Still some nice Northern and Walleye coming in with the Perch. Most all the bars are producing some nice Perch and a few Walleye. Fish 22' to 24' tell mid morning then move out to 28' to 30'. Best colors are still the bronze, chart, perch, rainbow or fire-tiger. Fire-eye minnow, buckshot rattling spoon or the angel eye are the best bet for lures. Use just half a fathead minnow and work the jig don't let it set very long with out jigging it. Off road travel is by snowmobile only. 4 wheel drives be sure you have a shovel with you.

2/5/01

Perch action was hot over the weekend with a few nice Walleyes mixed in. The Humps and the southend of Moses bar and the south end of Snag Hole were the best areas for Perch and Northern. Walleye was late day and came in from the south end of Snag. Fish in 22' early day and out to 33' mid day, then move back up on the bars late day. Fire-eye minnow, buckshot rattling spoons (Chart or firetiger color), baitfish forage minnow and the angel eye tipped with a fathead minnow. When the Perch move in just use a half of a minnow. Driving off the plowed roads is tricky, keep your eye out for wet spots. Snowmobile trails are groomed and in excellent shape.

1/29/01

Perch action slowed down a little over the weekend with a front moving in. Zummers, the Humps and the southend of Moses bars were the best areas for Perch and Northern. Fish in 22' early day and out to 30' mid day. Fire-eye minnow, buckshot rattling spoons and the angel eye tipped with a fathead minnow. Driving off the plowed roads is tricky with some slush spots stopping people. Check with any resort for bad areas for slush. Snowmobile trails are groomed and in excellent shape

1/23/01

Still getting a lot of action on Moses bar. Both the north end and the south end fish 18' then out to 30' mid day, then move back to the drop off late afternoon. North end of Moses look for the tracks off the plowed road, go about 1 mile and fish in 13' out to 17'. Snag Hole, Sugar & Center Bars are going good in the same depth. Perch size is in the 8" to 11" size. Walleyes late afternoon in the same areas.Northerns are still going very strong in the same areas.Angel eyes, fire-eye minnow and the buck-shot rattlin spoons are choice of baits tipped with a fathead and when the school comes in use half a minnow.4-wheel drives are driving off the plowed roads.Ice is 24" to 28", just stay away from all inlets or outlets, ice is thin there. Snowmobile trails are groomed and in excellent shape.

1/15/01

Moses is hot with most all drops on the bars giving up some nice Perch. Fish from 20' to 25' just off the bottom. Angel-eye,Fire-eye-minnow,Buckshoot rattling spoon is some of the best baits and tip them with half a fathead minnow. The new firelight from Northland is HOT, set it up so the light will be next to the glow part of the jig. Late day and overcast days are producing the best catches. 4 wheel drives are still driving off the plowed roads, just watch out for the snowdrifts. Snowmobile trails are groomed and in excellent shape.

01-01-01

HAPPY NEW YEAR to all.

Great weekend with a lot of Perch and a few Walleyes still going. Nice Northerns still coming in. We are driving on 20" to 24" of ice and 4 wheel drives are going all over the lake, just stay away from all river inlets. Snag Hole bar, Moses Bar is still hot.Moxeys Hole is starting to give up some nice Walleye and a lot of Perch. Fish from 24' to 28' with a fire tiger minnow, forage minnow, buck-shot rattlin spoon, gem-in-eye or Scenic tackles jiggin spoons. Tipp the hooks with a full minnow then when the fish get going good just use a half a minnow, fatheads working the best. Snowmobile trails are in excellent shape and being groomed twice a week.

12-25-00

Merry Christmas to all. We are still having a super bite.Alot of Perch being but back because of the new Perch limit, 20 a day 50 in possission. Snag Hole bar is still hot, 23' to 27'.Moses Bar & Horse Shoe bar at the same depths. Walleye action is early morning and then just before dark, Perch acton all day & Northern action from mid morning to late afternoon. The last few days our fish was takeing just about anything in the 1/8oz size, most action was on the Fire-eye minnow and the gem-in-eye tipped with a fathead minnow. Chart/Lime Buck-shot rattlin spoon was the best for the Walleyes. We now have great roads to Snag Hole and Moses bars with good access to the lake, 4 wheel drives can get around off the roads. Even with the cold we are having stay away from all river inlets or outlets, still thin ice.

12/18/00

Weather and we are getting it, cold & snow. Ice is 9" to 12" check at any resort before going out for ice conditions.Perch action is hot, Snag Hole bar in 23-24' use a firetiger fire-eye minnow tipped with a fathead, firetiger Forage minnow, HOT buck-shot rattle spoon, swedish pimple, Gemini, tipp all with a fathead minnow. Walleye action same area use the same baits. Action was so hot yesterday and today fisherman could only use 1 pole. Tippups up on the bar in 17' with a sucker minnow is bringing in some nice northerns. We will be plowing roads in the morning to Snag then on out to Moses bar.
captron@judds-resort.com

12/11/00

We have 6-7" of ice on most of the lake now and useing ATVS to get around. Great action sat & sun on Snag Hole in 23' to 25' with a fire-eye minnow or a forage minnow tipped with a fathead.Perch are going great, a few Walleyes and a lot of Northern action.Hope to get around more on the lake this week but with the hot action close by never had to move

12/5/00

Got 4-6" of ice by the Mississippi now.5-6" in front of Harry lake landing and the Northerns are running in 6' & 8'water.Checked out Snage Hole and have 5-6" of ice and got some nice Perch on Northlands chart fire-eye minnow tipped with a fathead minnow. Will be pulling the lite houses out to snage in the morning.6-8" of ice on the north shore.Hope to have better reports next week.

11/29/00

Been waiting for cold weather that never came to get this out. We have 2" by the Mississippi River,3 to 3 1/2" at Harry Lake landing,3-4" out from Richardtownsite landing,4-5" off Plug hat point,4-5" on Bowens flats and 5-6" in Cutfoot.

Check with any resort before going out on the lake and check the ice as you WALK out. You can walk out with portables and don't use ATVS yet. We got 6" of snow last night so it's insulating the ice and not makeing ice very fast with this 20 degree day today. We should be using ATVS and having our dark houses out the middle of next week. I don't recommend walking out past the 9' drop.

10/2/00

Another open water season coming to a close. Our fall colors are beautiful and the fall bite is on.Watch for my late Nov reports for ice and fishing conditions. Over all we had a great year for Walleye catching even with the NEW slot limit.Elpout bar, north end of Long bar,Horseshoe bar is going.Fish them at 17' or as cloce to the drop as possible.Roach rig with a green hook tipped with a leech or crawler.Shallows just look for any point or inside weed line. The hot areas are big Stony, the north shore and the mouth of the Mississippi.Fish at 6' to 7' with a chart/lime or fire-tiger 1/8oz fireball tipped with a fathead minnow.Work the jig fast for best results, slow the jig down and the jumbo Perch will takeit.

9-16-00

9/12/00 Our Walleyes are pretty scaterd getting ready for the fall bite.Long bar,Big & Little Muski bar,Sugar bar & the east west part of Center bar is holding nice fish.17'-20' with a Roach rig out to 50" and tipped with a leech is the best way to go.
Shallow of 6'-7' on the lower end of high banks,Stoney point on the west side,Sugar island and Ravins point.1/8oz chart/lime or fire tiger fireball jig tipped with a fathead.Fishing the shallows the last few days we had to move around the points a lot to stay on the Walleyes

9-4-00

what a great weekend for fishing. Long bar is HOT,fish 17' to 20' with a Roach rig out to 50" plain hook with a leech or dress it with a red beed. North end of center bar,the Humps and Big Muski. Fish the same depths on them with the same bait.Stony point,Mallerd point and the south end of Highbanks. Fish them in 6' to 7' with a firetiger or chart/lime fire-ball tipped with a fathead minnow. Perch action is heating up off Ravins point and Stony point on the rocks. We are seeing a lot of slot fish put back with some nice eaters in the 15" to 16" range coming in.

captron@judds-resort.com

8/29/00

WOW what fun we are having with the Walleyes.Center Bar,Big or Little Muski bar,Eelpout bar.Fish from 17' to 21' with a Roach Rig out to 50" tipped with a leech or crawler.Mid day dress up the rig with a red bead.Shallow water still going from Berches to Duck pass.Fish in 6' to 7' or 8' to 9'.Use a firetiger fireball tipped with a fathead minnow or a leech.A LOT of nice slot fish going back so watch the 17" to 26" slot.
