Hello from Gunflint in the northwoods
For those of you that have been up north in the winter, you can't
believe what this warm winter is doing to us. We normally have
over 3 feet of snow on the ground and nearly 40 inches of ice on
the lake. Yesterday we looked out on a patch of bare ground and
saw some clover coming up. Winter probably will dump more white
stuff on us and we should be skiing and dog sledding through
March, but in our 70+ years on the Gunflint Trail we have never
seen anything like this.
The forest cleanup of the downfall from last summer's storm is
coming along well. It looks like most of the harvesting
contracts will be finished by spring so new growth can start to
shoot up, or planting contracts can be awarded. This summer
there will be some new vistas and moose viewing areas as one of
the trade offs of the storm damage.
All the canoe routes and portages are fully open and ready to go.
It looks like we should have open water by the first week of May
with a decent water level. There should be some good canoeing
for several weeks before the bugs come out in June. The BWCA
canoe trips permit system is in full swing and there are quite a
number of permits still available throughout the summer, but it
is a good idea to start planning your trip dates and applying for
your travel permit if you are coming north for a canoe trip this
summer. Remember there is a 15% discount for complete outfitting
in May and early June.
At the lodge there are several fun activities planned in May and
June.
· In the riding department we have a Springtime Trails weekend
May 11-14, an Intro to Riding Weekend June 8-11 and a
Mother-Daughter Riding Weekend June 21-25.
· Two Women's Lifestyle Retreats are planned—May 17-21 and June
7-11
· Lake Trout Fishing Tournament is May 18-21
· Kid's Fishing Camp is June 21-25
· Birding Weekend is June 1-4
A considerable amount of refurbishing has been going on these
past few months. Many of our cabins have new carpeting, new
beds, and redone bathrooms. A truck load of new furniture is due
to arrive one of these days (we did not realize how long it takes
for delivery when you order directly from North Carolina). Sue
has ordered even more flowers for this summer as we keep adding
more flower beds here and there.
This looks like it will be the last summer for our bed and
breakfast units. These are the last of our old seasonal cabins.
We hope to break ground this fall with several new Premier Cabins
in the same locations as the old Trading Post building and cabins
4, 5 and 14.
If any of you need help planning a summer vacation or canoe trip
